Pavlovsk, Grand Palace — €15
Pavlovsk Palace is an 18th century Russian Imperial residence built by Paul I near St Petersburg. After his death, it became the home of his widow, Maria Feodorovna. The palace and the large English garden surrounding it are now a Russian state museum and public park.
Pavlovsk Park was conceived as a classic English landscape garden, an idealized landscape filled with picturesque pieces of classical architecture, designed to surprise and please the viewer. Like the English landscape garden, it took much its inspiration from the romanticized landscape paintings of Claude Lorraine and Hubert Robert. The gallery of Pavlovsk has twelve landscape paintings by Hubert Robert that were commissioned by Maria Feodorovna.
The last great architect of Pavlovsk, who was destined to put the finishing touches to the complex, was Carlo Rossi. In 1824 Rossi created one of his best works: the Palace Library. This building was constructed with a beautiful parquet floor of twelve sorts of wood and elegant furniture designed by famous architect Voronikhin.
We recommend you to take some peanuts with you while visiting the Park as you will have a great chance to feed squirrels that are so friendly and communicatuve with all visitors.
The approximate time of getting to Pavlovsk from the city center by car is 45 minutes. The whole excursion to this suburb including back transfer will take 4-5 hours.
Open: 10-18. Closed on Friday.
